A Canadian band, featuring the Drover
brothers, who are mostly known for their session work with
Megadeth: Glen Drover (guitar, also in King Diamond) and Shawn
Drover (drums). First 2 albums were released on smaller labels and
the 3rd one, "Nightmare World" (2000), on Metal Blade. The style is
somewhat doomy melodic thrash with a clean voiced singer. They
started gaining momentum with "NM" and released in rapid succession
three more albums, after which, in 2004, the brothers were asked to
join Megadeth. Their latest album, "Parallel Otherworld"
(2006), featuring the new singer, Nils K. Rue (formerly of a Norwegian prog band, Pagan's Mind), has just been released.
NIGHTMARE WORLD (2000)
RATING: ***
BEST SONGS: title track, "Dreamscape"
The best thing about this album is the production. It's simply
outstanding, and, after hearing the opening riff of the title track,
I thought to myself: "Wow, this will rock!" Unfortunately, afterwards the rest
of the album blended together. I have high expectations for
the music that lies on the border between power and thrash, but this
CD, while definitely not bad, simply failed to capture me. Brighter
moments included aforementioned title track, as well as "Lunar
Mission," "Fortress Of Red," acoustic instrumental "Magestic
Interlude," and epic "Dreamscape" at the end. If you can get this
album cheap or in trade, it's recommended.
